What is Merchant Navy?
The Merchant Navy or merchant marine is an organization comprising a fleet of ships that are registered in a country for commercial purpose only. The Merchant navy fleet is used for the transportation of cargo or passengers by sea to destinations around the world. These ships are constructed for commercial purposes for cargo stowage, transportation of oil, passengers etc. and are not fitted with armament like guns, missiles , etc keeping in view their role of carrying out trade with other countries
How is Indian Navy and Merchant Navy related?

These ships are constructed for commercial purposes for cargo stowage, transportation of oil, passengers etc. and are not fitted with armament like guns, missiles , etc keeping in view their role of carrying out trade with other countries .
The Indian Navy on the other hand is geared to handle maritime security viz the protection of the Indian coastline from foreign aggression as well as to protect India`s sea trade and sea based resources viz fishing, oil and mineral deposits, etc. Indian Navy ships are fitted with the latest weaponry which include long range guns, missiles, rocket launchers, anti-missile defence sensors and weapons, etc.
The Merchant Navy fleet mainly comprises of container ships, cargo liners, tankers, cruisers, passenger vessels and other types of seafaring vessels. Indian Navy ships comprises of warships like frigates, destroyers, aircraft carriers, submarines etc.
During times of war, the Indian Navy is also tasked with the additional role of envoy protection of merchant ships so that the country sea trade is not impacted.

What is the minimum eligibility / Age limit / Physical & other requirements to join merchant Navy?
To Join as a Deck Cadet:
Eligibility: 12th Std. with more than 60% marks in PCM aggregate
Or B.Sc. – 55% marks in the final year (with Physics in any year of B.Sc.)
Or B.E. Or B.Tech. With more than 55% marks in the final year
(50% in English in any of the above cases is essential)
Age Limit: Between 17.5 to 25 years
Medical Fitness: 6/6 in each eye, no visual aids, no color blindness
To Join as a GP Rating:
Eligibility: 10th Std passed with 40% average marks in English, Maths and Science
Or 10 + 2 or ITI Engineering with 50% average marks (40% in English in either case)
Age Limit: Between 17.5 to 25 years
Medical Fitness: 6/6 in each eye, no visual aids, no color blindness
To join as an Engineer Officer:
Eligibility: Graduation in BE or BTECH (Mechanical) Engineering or Naval Architecture with minimum marks of 55% aggregate in degree.
AND
Minimum 50% marks in English subject at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam conducted by a recognized board or University.
Age Limit: 28 years (as on commencement of the course)
To join as an Electro Technical Officer:
Passed 10 + 2 with minimum 50% in PCM (mandatory for diploma or degree).
Graduate in B. E / B. Tech or Diploma (Electrical & Electronics or any other relating branch with electrical & electronics/communication etc.) With 50%, recognized by AICTE or Directorate of Technical Education respectively.
AND
Minimum 50% in English subject either in 10th or 12th
or in Degree Course.
Age Limit Not more than 35 years.

Is the Open School Certificate Exam valid for joining Merchant Navy?
If the concerned Institute is recognized by the State Board or the C.B.S.E you are eligible to join.
Can Women join the Merchant Navy?
Yes, The eligibility requirements are same for Male and Female aspirants.

Is there any Common Entrance Test (CET) for entering into Merchant Navy? If so, is there any Entrance coaching centre?

Can we apply for Education Loans for undergoing the Diploma in Nautical Science leading to BSc Nautical Science at IMU?
Yes, Loan will need to be processed through the banks and the concerned Loan process will be individuals responsibility.
Will there be any salary during the training period?
Yes, there is a stipend for sponsored candidates but it varies from shipping company to shipping company and can be as high as 600 US Dollars.
How much time does it take for a Deck Cadet/Engine Cadet to become a Master/Chief Engineer?
A Deck Cadet/Engine room Cadet can become a Master/Chief Engineer in eight to ten years subject to appearing and passing all the promotion examinations in time and also completing the necessary Sea-time.
What is the Retirement Age in Merchant Navy?
As per Seamen’s Employment Office order the retirement age is 60 yrs. This rule also provided discretion to the Director – Seamen’s Employment Office, to permit employment of seamen over 60 years of age, but not exceeding 65, provided the ship owner accepts the engagement of the seaman and the prescribed medical authority declares him medically ‘Fit’ prior to engagement.
